Ice skating in Finland, riding a dog sled over a glacier in Alaska or bobsleighing in Canada are exotic ways of doing winter sports. However, the majority of people in Spain prefer skiing or snowboarding.
Did you know that every day there is an average of three injuries for every 1000 skiers? Most of the accidents are due to lack of skill or experience. The most serious affect the knee because it is the part of the body that bears the greatest pressure.
For this reason, it is essential that you have the proper equipment. Wear suitable skiwear and make sure you warm up properly to protect your muscles.
Skiing is a risk sport
We recommend you take out an insurance policy that suits your snow activities: if you go the mountains regularly, you travel within the country or you have decided you want to enjoy an experience abroad.
The insurance must include medical expenses (for illness or accident), Civil Liability (for any damages you may cause to other people) and baggage cover (in the event of theft or loss).
When anyone comes to our office to take out winter sports travel insurance, we always recommend including mountain rescue coverage. It hardly ever happens but if you ever needed to be rescued, you would have to assume the costs, which are very high. We also think it’s a good idea to include repatriation for people who ski abroad.
Before you set off for a day in the snow, make sure you have a large breakfast. Take dried fruit and nuts with you in case you have a meltdown and don’t forget to protect your skin to prevent it from getting burnt by the snow.
