Do you have an electric scooter? This is the basic regulation in Spain.

You cannot go on sidewalks, pedestrian areas, highways, dual carriageways, interurban roads in general, and urban tunnels. Riding is permitted on all urban roads, unless municipal ordinances establish otherwise.

The maximum speed allowed is 25 km/h. You cannot drive with headphones on, use mobile devices, or drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

It is also mandatory on scooters to have a braking system, which has a bell and rear and front lights.

The Spanish Traffic Agency (DGT) also recommends using a helmet, although it is up to municipal ordinances to rule whether it is compulsory. You already know that all personal protection systems are worthwhile. And finally, it recommends Civil Liability Insurance, which we consider totally necessary, since scooters have caused over 400 accidents and 12 deaths.

It is also important for you to know that registering scooters is recommended in larger jurisdictions. Taking this action is optional, although it can be claimed from City Hall. It can only be registered with the DGT. It is inexpensive, and it can be very useful, for example, in case of theft.

“Do not forget that you are a driver so you are responsible. Now enjoy your ride!”
