Old Car or Historic Vehicle? They Are Not the Same (and Your Insurance Should Reflect That)

Do you have a car over 30 years old in the garage and assume it is already “historic”? Not so fast: age is only the beginning. The Historic Vehicle Regulations, in force since 2024, have changed the rules.

For the DGT to consider a vehicle historic, being old is not enough. It must meet four conditions: it must be at least 30 years old, its model must no longer be in production, it must retain its original condition (with no major changes to the engine, brakes, steering or bodywork), and it must be well maintained. If you restored it in the past by altering key parts, it may no longer qualify.

The good news is that the process has been simplified. There are now two routes: Group A, which is quicker and cheaper, for cars already registered in Spain with a valid ITV inspection; and Group B, a more comprehensive process for imported vehicles, permanently deregistered vehicles or those with special heritage value.

Historic status does come with limits: the vehicle may only be used occasionally, for a maximum of 96 days a year, and never as an everyday car. In return, it benefits from advantages such as less frequent ITV inspections.

And the insurance? It is still compulsory. Because these vehicles are used infrequently and carefully maintained, specific policies are available for historic vehicles. They are often cheaper than conventional car insurance and offer coverage designed for these treasures on wheels.
